New to North Carolina! I have been fishing off and on my whole life. Until recently, I have done most of my fishing in Texas; both salt and fresh water. I have also fished Walleye and Northern Pike in upstate New York. My funniest catch was a 32 inch Bonnethead Shark off the Bolivar Peninsula in Texas. My family and I moved to North Carolina recently due to my career. We have been trying to get excited about the fishing. So far, we have seen a lot of beautiful scenery and 3 Bluegill (large enough to steal our bait).
Currently, we are looking to do some catfishing. We have tried chicken livers, stink bait (3 kinds), beef livers, live minnows, dead crawfish, hotdogs, cheddar cheese, easy cheese, night crawlers, red worms and meal worms. We have used sinkers and let the bait rest on the bottom, we have used bobbers and had the bait about 12 to 18 inches from the surface and we have casted out and dragged the bait back slowly. We have fished in the morning, afternoon and into the wee hours (around 3:00 am). The temperature has ranged from 50 to 85 degrees the last few weeks and it has been sunny to cloudy to pouring down rain. Basically what I am saying is that I am running out of options. We have now fished 7 stocked lakes and 1 river in the last month to no avail.
If anyone has any ideas, we are open to anything. We have heard that Goldfish work really well but I have been unable to find any regulation on whether it is legal in this state or not. Since I have never fished with Goldfish, I am at a loss.
Anyway, we are fishing for catfish with 30 lbs test on a 9’ rod. I believe this should be sufficient for the shore fishing we are doing seeing as we don’t have a boat (will be our first purchase when I get back from Iraq).
I am excited to join this group and hope for great fishing in the future. The good news is it can’t get any worse for us seeing we are already at the bottom!
