Sept 06, 2007 - Falls Lake I met kayakingglenn this morning at the Upper Barton ramp and brought my new Perception Search 15 kayak for its maiden run. Perfect weather and we did manage to run into some fish. Nothing special, mostly 1lb-ish largemouths with a couple of variants thrown in to keep it interesting. All fish came while trolling small shad raps. The bass were really crushing the crankbaits - several had the bait fully inside the mouth.
More of a schoolie LM bite than the strong mixed bag from last month. Did manage a couple of Whites in the mix. First fish was the largest - 2lb Largemouth around 7:30. Next fish was a long time coming - probably 8:45, but then the bite seemed to turn on. Fish #3 was a 16" White Bass that had been caught before (maybe by me? I thought I taught them better than that). Glenn must not have been crossing his fingers just right for most of his trolling but he finally got off the skunk on the paddle home.
Glenn's machine is impressive. My new yak is a bit more traditional - very nice ride. Seems to push less water than the Redfish, gets moving more quickly and has a little less primary stability... About as expected. Seemed to have a little more hull-slap than the Redfish. The molded seat felt great at the beginning but wore on the old tailbone after a couple hours. Gonna need some more padding. The extra foot of length was not really noticeable (not much difference between 14 and 15 feet).
All in all a good morning, bite came later later than expected so I stayed longer than expected. I prefer the trophy white bass but will take a 7 fish day anytime... |
