small is beautiful Launched my 12 foot jon at Flemingtown (Kerr Lake) this a.m. at sunrise. All the tourney boats had left the dock, and I was able to squeeze my small rig into a parking spot close to the ramp where no one else would fit! Water was even a bit higher than yesterday. Wouldn't be surprised if they close Flemingtown if it gets much higher.
Headed up a creek and found a cove. Since it takes me a while to get anywhere with my little put-put B&S, I decided to stick with that cove. Had to be fish in there somewhere. Finally found them in 2 to 5 feet of water holding on submerged logs and brush. And there was lots of that with the high water. Got back into places a bass boat or center console could never go!
No records broken, but landed a half dozen small crappie (1/4-1/2 pound), a small cat, and a small bass, all caught on live minnows. A multi-species day is always fun! Pulled most of the crappie from practically underneath the boat. Too windy and brushy to cast out my slip float rigs.
Looks like the crappie spawn is on at Kerr. Wonder if tomorrow's cold snap will shut them down.
Got back to the ramp before the T-storms and before the tourney anglers. Except for the one that got away, nearly a perfect trip!
P.S. Sorry, no pix. Dropped my camera into a sandy creek bank. Anybody got a used one for sale? Send me a p.m. |
