THE MAD REPORT
April 2008 Edition
Message from the President
I don’t even know where to begin! This has been an incredibly busy time for Military Appreciation Day. Since our last newsletter, we have had to face a change in the composition of our Board of Directors, open the enrollment process for our Troops, raise money, seek out volunteers and perhaps the biggest challenge yet, a change of venue just three months prior to the event!
All of this happened while we were in the midst of wrapping up our plans for our largest event ever! Needless to say, it has been an exciting time to be part of the MAD organization.
To start with, I had the unpleasant task of informing everyone that due to actions outside of our control, Eric Floyd has had to step down as Vice President of Military Appreciation Day, Inc. This decision was not something that Eric wanted to make, and definitely was not a decision that we wanted to accept. Unfortunately, our hands are tied and Eric has left his post as VP of MAD, Inc.
Eric Floyd has been a key catalyst in MAD since Day One and I am sorry that he is not going to be able to continue in an official capacity although I am extremely hopeful that he will continue in an “unofficial” capacity for many years to come. Without his leadership, this great cause that we all have grown so passionate about, would never have become a reality.
Please join me in thanking Eric Floyd, BMCS for his service to our country and tireless dedication to MAD!
With Eric’s departure we have a significant opportunity for new leadership at MAD, Inc. and I am thrilled to inform you that Steve Stephens (aka. Hot Spot) has accepted our offer to become the new Vice President of MAD, Inc. Steve brings a tremendous dedication to supporting our troops along with a great deal of energy to make MAD and our events successful. His tireless work on our web site, promoting MAD throughout the fishing community and his efforts to spread the word about our events through media organizations have had incredible results in a very short time.
The news that affects us most though is our very exciting change of venue. For the past two years we have hosted our events at the Coast Guard Station Fort Macon. However, an opportunity presented itself and thanks to our friends at The Big Rock and Capt. Dave Tilley of the Continental Shelf and Fryingpantower.com fame, we will host MAD III on the Waterfront in Morehead City, NC!
This change of venue will give the general public a chance to stop in and thank the troops in person. What a wonderful site it will be when 1000 people show up to simply say “Thank You”, face to face to the men and women of the United States Military!
Finally, while all of this activity has been going on, we also had the huge task of opening up the registration process for those we are privileged enough to be able to thank on June 7, 2008. So far nearly 250 troops and their dependents have signed up for MAD III!
With nearly 50 private boats set up and both the Carolina Princes and the Continental Shelf ready to go, we still need to arrange for another 50 private boats if we are going to meet the very high demand for fishing spots.
If you have a boat and are interested in volunteering, please do so. Whether you fish offshore, nearshore, inshore is not important. What is important is providing for a fantastic day on the water and showing our Troops that they have an incredible amount of support!
We have less than two months left before we host the largest volunteer run “Take the Troops Fishing” event in the United States and we need your help to pull it off.
Thank you for continuing to be part of the Military Appreciation Day Family. Without your support, we could never even dream of ‘Thanking Those Who Serve America’ on such a grand scale!
Thank you,
Rich Anderson
