Stripers @ Weldon Sunday (4/27) Fished at Weldon for Stripers for the first time on Sunday and it was a great day of fishing.
Fished from 8-12:30. I was drifting and bouncing minnows off the bottom the most of the time. I caught 12 stripers all between 16" - 20". Two were in the keeper range but they went back anyways. I would have caught more fish but I only bought 2 dozen minnows! Bad decision on my part!
I bounced the minnows off the bottom with a single split shot and then a 18" - 24" leader. Pretty simple but it was effective. The split shot was probably 1/4 ounce, just enough to have contact with the bottom.
I seemed to catch the most fish drifting starting where Little River joins the main river. I would always get one or two before getting to the big rock. Then would get some right after the big rock. I did drift a lot farther down the river in some early drifts but didn't see much action so in later drifts I would just motor back to the top after going a ways past the big rock.
After the minnows ran out I was drifting and casting jigs and flukes but didn't get any. I only did that for about an hour then called it a day.
There were a ton of boats on the river and it would have been very difficult, if not impossible to drift without a trolling motor because some people were anchored.
All in all it was a fun morning of fishing. I'm going to have to be "sick" one day during the week to go again.

****Note to anyone launching your boat at Weldon by yourself, it's not easy! The current and lack of a dock to tie off to make it diffucult. Luckily I have a small aluminum boat and could just tie it up to the shore right by the boat launch and then go park my car. |
