Default juniper creek bowfin

hey folks
went with the wife and some friends to their place down near shallote and holden beach this weekend.while down there we hooked up with a friend who lives there and i was telling him friday about the bowfins we had caught at city lake this year.he took us to a creek down there called juniper creek.we took a couple of canoes and went bowfinning.never had targetted them before,so it was a new deal for me.we used a variety of baits, but i went to wal mart and bought a few rattlin' rogues and it turned out they liked them as good or better than anything we had.we caught twelve of them in a 200 yard stretch of the creek, then it narrowed down to only about ten feet wide, with a lot of trees lying across it so we fished back to our put in at camp branch bridge.we only fished about two hours, but it was fun til the deer flies showed up!they seemed to like our repellent, didn't do much to stop 'em!most of the fish we caught were only about two pounds, wayne got a nice five pounder, however on a dead minnow they had bought at a bait shop.can't remember what they were called, but a lot of the locals use them.i caught six 'fins and four pickeral on my rogues.the pickeral were all redfins, not more than ten inches long.the bowfin are great fihjters, but i would prefer to fish for them in a larger body of water next time!
