In the theme of giving fly fishing tips, I will add one to the list. Do yourself a favor and learn the 5-10 most common flies in your local trout waters. The big 3 tend to be mayflies, caddis flies, and stoneflies. Learn what their larvae and adults look like - including color and size variations.

Before nearly every fly fishing trip I flip over a few rocks and see what is under them. Knowing what it is in the water will help improve the number of strikes you have, especially if you can match the size. If nothing else - smaller is better!

Personally, I consider giant stoneflies to be the jackpot because they are super fun to fish. Good luck and tight lines!
