It is a Humminbird 170 with the Dual Beam, whatever that means. Question 1: Will it still work well enough for depth and temp. and maybe let me know if a fish is under there. Question 2: Or am I totally screwed. Thanks for any input and yes I know I am an idiot.
I'm looking for a measuring board like one that I see in a lot of kayak tournament shots that is curved and fairly wide. An example can be seen in the link below. I need one that goes up to about 30" for measuring Reds. My google-fu is usually pretty good about finding things, but for all my searching I can't find a retailer of such a board. Anyone know of any local or online sellers of this type of concave/wide measuring board? I have seen the Hawg Trough on Cabelas but I would prefer one more like shown in the photo. Any help is appreciated.

...and tons of excitement, I thought I would share with you all that I have recently joined the Native Watercraft (www.nativewatercraft.com) family as an Endorsed Fishing Guide! I am very humbled by the opportunity and look forward to the future opportunities with Native and the entire family within Native Watercraft.

I had the awesome opportunity to go to the factory on Friday and was provided a first-hand tour of the factory by Andy Zimmerman, CEO of Legacy Paddlesports. The factory is simply incredible! It is awesome to see the work that goes into the products being pushed through the Legacy Paddlesports arena!

I had launched (after 2 years of "talking about it") my kayak fishing guide service, www.AnglersNook.net. Above all, I hope this opportunity will continue to allow me time on the water introducing new people to kayak fishing, as it is an absolute passion that I personally can't do without.

I thought I would share the news (though later than intended but some folks had to hear it first-hand from me as that was important to me) and look forward to continued future fishing trips together on the water.

Thank you for reading...

I picked up my new 2011 Ultimate at the factory last Friday. I already knew the changes for this year and was excited about them. I have always been a fan of the Ultimate and liked it just fine the way it was. But consumers did have some things they wanted to see different and Native listened. For all you Native owners check out this site. It is a forum just for Native owners and there are lots of knowledgeable people with great ideas on there.

Get:Outdoors Native Watercraft

The boys at Native watch this site and do change things do to consumer feedback. So if there is anything you want to see different start a thread on it.

The skirts in these pics are from my old Ultimate. Native has put out new spray skirts so that they do not cover the Handles. Mine will be here then end of this month.

Over molded Handles

This year Native Changed the Carrying handles. There main reason for this was the noise it made when it wasn't secured and people would often get there lure snagged on the front handle. You will also notice in this picture the updated graphics. They put the "fishing is good here" symbol right behind the front carrying handle.

Restyled first class seat

When you already have the best seat on the market there isnt much else you can change about it other then the looks and they did just that. The new looks of this seat is awesome. Very eye catching.

Improved Arm rest pads

They have used the same closed cell foam they use on the Osceola. So now they are fixed to the kayak and there is no drain plug under one of the pads so these do not pop off. They are much more comfortable.

Updated Graphics

I think the graphics are alot more modern then the previous. Very nice looking

Groove Track

Anglers wanted to be able to mount rod holders and accessories with out having to drill holes. So Native added Grove tracks just in front of the seat on both sides.

New drain slots

This was perhaps the biggest thing consumers had a problem with. When the Ultimate first came out the drain plug was on the top of the stern. Which functioned well. When Native changed it to under the arm rest a lot of people were not happy with it, when you turned the kayak on its side the water never drained all the way out. Well I believe they have came up with something better then both previous options. There are now two slots just over the native symbol. When you turn the kayak on its side every thing come out sand and small debris included.

They have also added a Captains Perch for those who would like to sit up higher. You must purchase this separately.

Last but not Least they have added a Camo option for this years Ultimates. It is very natural looking. I personally really like the looks of this camo and had to have it.

I have not seen this mentioned any where but it feels like the seat is slightly higher and the adjustable bar under the seat allows you to get more of a pitch out of the seat.

I am very excited about this kayak. They made my favorite kayak even better
Great picture of a kayak fishing warrior navigating the Guadalupe River near San Antonio. The spirit of the folks that we get the honor to fish with is amazing. We provide therapy on the water and these folks have a blast.

See the article and read more at http://www.heartoftexas.va.gov/OPA/Heal ... 010_v6.pdf

Recreational therapy more than just a good time
On a Thursday morning in May, Sgt. 1st Class Marc Dervaes did something he wasn’t completely sure he’d ever do again: he hopped into a plastic boat, shoved off from the rocky shore and paddled down the Guadalupe River.
The event, which passed unnoticed by the world at large, was a tribute to the inventiveness of a prosthetist at the Center for the Intrepid. More, it was a tribute to the indomitable will of a soldier. The opportunity came courtesy of a relatively new non-profit that has introduced more than 3,100 wounded warriors to the therapeutic benefits of kayak angling over the last three years.
Heroes on the Water was the brainchild of a group of Veterans who believed that all of the things that made their time on the water so much fun might add up to more than just a good time for someone recovering from the physical and mental wounds of war.
“It’s incredibly therapeutic for them. We don’t understand, because we haven’t been there, but it’s amazing that we’re able to help someone with something as simple as what we do,” said Jim Dolan, the Dallas-based national director of HOW. “It’s so much more than just recreation. You’re providing physical, mental and occupational therapy at the same time, and that’s pretty powerful stuff.”
Dervaes wears his in his sleeve. The platoon sergeant was injured Sept. 12, 2009, as he raced with his men to assist a logistics convoy that had come under fire in Kunor Province, Afghanistan. Before they could reach their objective, the soldiers from Troop C, 3rd Squadron, and 61st Cavalry were ambushed. The Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle Dervaes was riding in was hit by small arms fire and four rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).
It wasn’t the first time Dervaes had been shot – he survived a round to the helmet during one of two earlier tours in Iraq – but the RPG destroyed his right arm at the elbow, ending his Afghanistan deployment at the four-month mark.
“My first thought was that I wasn’t going to be able to ride a motorcycle or drive a stick anymore,” he said.
It took Dervaes just three days to get to Brooke Army Medical Center and the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio, where he would spend the next seven months undergoing treatment and therapy. By the time he saw someone with a Heroes on the Water t-shirt and asked about the program, he had five different prostheses, including one slotted to hold a kayak paddle.
“I’ve kayaked for a number of years, mostly whitewater stuff, so I was anxious just to find out what the possibilities were,” Dervaes said.
After the kayak fishing expedition, he got some one-on-one coaching from an Olympic paddler, and even got his roll back.
“Because my right arm was dominant, I always used to roll right,” he said, of the procedure in which a capsized kayaker flips the boat right-side-up without leaving the cockpit. “They got me in a lot of pool sessions and I was able to get my roll back and roll left.”
Dervaes, who recently bought a new kayak and will soon retire from the Army to his Colorado Springs home with his wife of 11 years, says newly injured service members shouldn’t rule out anything.
“The prostethists down there at the Center for the Intrepid in San Antonio are miracle workers,” he said. “My prosthetist even made me a mountain biking arm; it has a shock absorber in it. My prosthetist told me before I left that I brought several challenges to his table that he’d never done before. He now has the knowledge to put some of that stuff together.”
Will that same arm work on a motorcycle? Turns out it’s a moot point.
“My wife – and she’s been incredibly supportive and protective of me from the moment I got hurt – has an opinion about that,” said Dervais. “She said if I get in an accident and lose my other arm, she’s not going to wipe my @#$ for me the rest of my life.”

I was hoping to get some advice on a possible kayak buy.

Quick background: I've recently started fishing again after being away from it for a few years, and have been having a blast, though I do get a bit frustrated with the limited shore/bank fishing available in my area. I've also been watching with envy as all the kayakers on the local lakes paddle by, and I've been reading all the great fishing reports from kayakers here. I've been browsing through the kayak forums here occasionally, watching craigslist just to get an eye on prices, etc.

As it turns out, a bunch of our friends have recently decided to get kayaks, including my wife's best friend, and another couple we spend time with pretty regularly. My wife doesn't fish much, but I have taken her out a couple times, and I think she will continue to fish at least on a somewhat regular basis.

I don't want to spend a ton of money, and probably will have a pretty limited budget to work with, but I also don't want to go too cheap and end up needing/wanting to upgrade in the next few years.

So - I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons of getting a single tandem, versus a pair of solo boats. I was specifically looking at the Native Watercraft Ultimate 14.5 Tandem Hybrid, since I just happened to find one used, but am certainly open to suggestions on good models.

The tandem seems like it would work pretty well as a nice roomy solo boat too, so that's a positive - I imagine I'll be taking it out by myself on a pretty regular basis. The Ultimate I was looking at seems to run around $1100 new, I think the used one I found could probably be had for $800 or less. I'm thinking a pair of solos would cost a good deal more, or I'd have to sacrifice quality to get the same price range.

It also seems like it would be pretty easy to strap a single kayak to the top of our minivan's roof rack, or into the bed of my truck, either on top of the cab, or hanging out the back. With a pair, I think I'd probably want to invest in a kayak rack, adding more to the cost.

One downside to a tandem for me would be the weight/size. A 70 lb boat seems like it would be pretty heavy to load and unload by myself, though certainly doable, but almost certainly too much for my wife, though I don't know that she'd go out solo very often. A 10 foot solo boat should weigh quite a bit less, and be easier to load and unload by myself.
Thoughts? Have any of you made this decision recently? If so - what did you end up going with? Happy with your results? Thanks for sharing your experiences/tips/advise.
