Hi all,
It was good meeting some of you at the Meet n Greet. Unfortunately my camera died so I have no photos to share of the event. Thanks again to Ashley and company for a great event!
Had a condo at Oak Island the week following the event. Surf fished one day, nothing.
Another day launched at the ramp on the ICW at 54th and Yacht. Caught nothing but had fun back in Beaverdam Creek. Got mucky feet due to outgoing tide; had to push the kayak a few yards back to the water.
On Wed the weather was calm enough to try the surf with the kayak. With all fishing gear stripped I started out in knee deep water and was able to launch successfully. The day was beautiful so I decided to paddle out to a buoy located a ways from the Yaupon pier. I was free, I was the ancient polynesian, the Inuit in a skin boat, Thor Heyerdal!
I rounded the bouy and headed back, contemplating what I had read regarding surf landings. While I was coming closer to shore I noticed a pickup with flashing lights pulling a small trailer. As I got closer I saw them coming down the beach my direction. I figured, OK, I'm in trouble, not allowed to launch/land here.
Paying complete attention to the task at hand I brought the kayak in, carefully leaning into the small surf until I was again in knee deep water, exited the yak successfully without mishap. My wife was on the shore watching and when I came up to her she said she was going to kill me!

The pickup with the lights were there because she lost sight of me, panicked, and called 911!

I was no longer the ancient polynesian, the Inuit, or Thor.

After talking a few minutes with my rescuers they left. I wasn't happy and my wife wasn't happy. A visiting European family was situated near my wife's umbrella/chair. The father told me it was wonderful that my wife loves me so much she would make that call.

The next day was nice also so got up early and fished along the abandoned Yaupon pier using Gulp shrimp on a jighead. Caught these.

Overall a good time was had and my wife is now thinking of a kayak too.
