Default Will a 16' Canoe be too much to haul?

Hi guys. I am about to splurge on a new boat. One option is a 16.5' canoe-kayak hybrid. It is a tandem and will be used for a lot of fishing and also recreational paddling. I was wondering if you think this will be too long to put on the roof of an SUV safely. The vehicle is a Ford Escape, which is about 14.5' long. I was thinking of getting a Yakima roof rack canoe carrier which locks onto my existing roof rack. I also have straps and bungees. Do you think this would fit the bill or is it just too long? Thanks!
