The Rotary Club of Oriental North Carolina announces its annual Tarpon Tournament, a catch and release event with over $22,000 in cash & prizes for the winners. The tournament benefits the Oriental Rotary Scholarship Fund, providing academic scholarships to worthy high school seniors and community college students from Pamlico County.

Back by popular demand, Whittaker Pointe Marina will be the base for this year’s tournament. This lovely and spacious Marina serves the needs of the large boating community both locally and statewide. The Marina welcomes transients and those looking for long term accommodations for their boats.

The Pamlico Sound offers excellent tarpon fishing. In these shallow waters tarpon hang out at the surface on calm days. Sometimes they crash from the water when attacking baitfish. Anglers aim to arrive in a good spot ahead of the fish to avoid spooking them; then, anchor, set out their baits and wait for a strike.

Entry fee schedule for captains is: before 5:00 p.m. 6/20/08 -- $225; before 5:00 p.m. 7/25/08 -- $300; after 5:00 p.m. 7/25/08 -- $350. Each boat will have a volunteer observer to officially record tarpon catches and releases. Hardee’s of Pamlico County will provide complimentary lunches to observers.

The Marina will host Saturday evening festivities to include a barbecue dinner, raffle and free concert.
