Fly Fishing in New Bern?

I'm new to fly fishing, I have a cheap combo I bought last year because I wanted to get started on it. I never got a chance because school snuck up on me and took all my time along with work. That's coming up again real quick and I still haven't had a chance to go out. I don't know the first thing about fly fishing, although I have been practicing my cast. Is there anyone in or around New Bern who would be willing to show a newbie the ropes of fly fishing in craven county, anywhere in the county is good with me, preferrably New Bern or James City though, since that's where I live. Any one know any good spots to fish from on the bank? Don't have the time or energy to put my boat in during the week and I never take it out alone (safety reasons), and the fiance hasn't let me buy a canoe yet. So I'll be doing most of my fishing from the bank. Any help would be appreciated.
