Cape Lookout Shoals Report 10/3-4 As they say, "Son it was a toime!" We left my friend CB's dock on Swimmin' Creek in Marshallerg just as the sun was starting to take a peek over Core Banks. We headed straight to the Slot, south of Shark Island, and started trolling Clark spoons. Everything went off at once, and the haul was 3 nice bluefish. As as the sun got a little higher the blues went into a real frenzy. We quit trolling and started casting topwater plugs, Gotchas and Butterbeans at fish that were popping on top in every direction. There were no other boats within at least 3 miles. Some really nice (20-24") Spanish were mixed in, but it was hard to keep the blues off a plug long enough to catch a mackerel. By 9:30 we had the cooler slam full and soon headed to the Harkers Island Fishing Center for ice and gas. What the fish were puking up on deck were very tiny glass minnows. Like if you cut an inch-long piece out of a thin rubber band and put an eye on one end. Saturday we went back, anchored the boat at Shark Island and tried fishing for drum in the white water. It was no dice but we did see a couple of very impressive sharks. And they were in water not much over knee deep, so if you go there, be careful! There was quite a fleet of boats in the Slot Saturday afternoon so I guess the fish were still there. Attached photos show where some of the blues ended up -- on my smoker. Also, check out the tooth marks in the topwater plugs.
