Default Fishing the Sounds

Hey guys, i got a quick question and would like a few opinions. I have an 18 foot bass boat, and I've been thinking about fishing the Pamlico Sound. I figure the roughest water I can take is 2 to possibly 3 foot swells. How rough does it get out there? Is it adviseable to take this kind of boat out, and how far should I go out? I'm using my head in this, and I fish the inlets and the Intracoastal Waterway. I've seen on tv people fishing with bass boats in rough water, but I don't know what kind of rig they have. Any suggestions?
