Fishing in Boone

hello all, I will be vacationing near Boone NC over the 4th of July weekend. there is a huge lake that snakes through the mountains (not sure of the name) it's really deep, wide, and long. Will be spending lots of time on the lake. I want to bring a fishing pole to wet a line while out there but I have no idea what to bring or what to expect. I primarily fish salt water off the coasts of FL. any information on what bait would be good to use, what kind of fish I can catch, ect. would all be very helpful. thanks. keep the lines tight
