MFC CENTRAL REGIONAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE June 1st

Notice is hereby given that the Marine Fisheries Commission Central Regional Advisory Committee will meet on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the Duke University Marine Lab Auditorium, located at 135 Duke Marine Lab Road, Pivers Island, Beaufort, NC.

The committee will review and discuss the draft Striped Mullet Fishery Management Plan (FMP). The Draft FMP has been prepared by the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) with the advice of the Striped Mullet FMP Advisory Committee. Discussion of the FMP began in May 2003. Attached are a copy of the Draft Striped Mullet FMP and a copy of presentations on the stock assessment and the FMP. The Executive Summary Section (pp 1-2) and Section 9 – Principal Issues and Management Options (pp 72-79) contains the recommended management measures. Management measures and the Draft FMP will be reviewed by the MFC regional committees, and public meetings will be held in conjunction with the regional and Finfish Committee meetings to receive additional public input. The following are dates and locations for the public meetings and MFC committee meetings: Wilmington Regional Office – on 5/10; Washington Regional Office – on 5/23; College of the Albemarle, Building B, Room 202, Elizabeth City – on 5/26; Duke Marine Laboratory Auditorium, Beaufort – on 6/1; Archdale Building, Ground Floor Hearing Room, Raleigh – 6/2. All meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. The MFC plans to review the FMP at its June 28-29 meeting in Raleigh, NC.

The Committee will also get an update on recent legislation involving fisheries. Action has been taken by the Senate on the saltwater fishing license, oysters, and the Coastal Habitat Protection Plan (CHPP). The House has introduced several bills on oysters, and recently dealt with legislation on menhaden fishing.
