Exclamation N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission Wins Three National Awards

RALEIGH (July 29) — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission won three national awards, including first place for best magazine article, at the Association for Conservation Information (ACI) annual conference held earlier this month in Ogden, Utah.

Greg Jenkins, managing editor of Wildlife in North Carolina magazine, won first place for the article “Clash of the Tight Lines” published in November 2004. The article, which won in the category for parks, historical or cultural topics, contrasted the camaraderie and competitiveness of anglers fishing in the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club Annual Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament — a popular team event that has been held at Cape Hatteras for five decades and has a 10-year waiting list for would-be participants.

Jenkins also won second place in the same category for an article published in May 2004, “Deep Experience,” which chronicled a 24-hour visit to the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area where hiking, camping, wildlife viewing and rock climbing opportunities abound.

Wildlife Commission Webmaster Lee Ratcliffe won second-place honors for best Web site in 2004. This marked the third year in a row that the Wildlife Commission’s Web site has garnered national recognition, winning third place in 2003 and first place in 2002.

“Clash of the Tight Lines” has been reprinted on the Wildlife Commission’s Web site, www.ncwildlife.org, for the public to download free as a PDF file. >From the home page, click the link for this news release, and then click the link within this release for Jenkins’ article.

Founded in 1938, ACI is a non-profit association of state, federal and Canadian fish and wildlife agencies as well as private conservation organizations. The association trains and informs the agencies’ information and education professionals and provides forums to exchange ideas and improve skills.
