Lures used in ocean

What lures do you use when fishing in the ocean from a kayak? I know it would depend on what you are fishing for, but I am assuming the case to be within 1.5 miles of the beach and fishing for Spanish/Blues or anything else that bites (as I tend to catch a lot of sharks).

I have had luck with Rapala X-Raps and Yo-Zuri Crystal minnows. Have also caught fish on spoons. What about you guys? Anyone used live bait? I think I would have a problem with sharks, as they have torn up my X-Raps, and chased my fish when hooked .
