Saltwater Newbie

I am planning on doing some ocean fishing with a friend in mid Spet around Corolla, NC. We have been kayak fishing for several years and are confident about being safe and keeping our gear stowed properly. We will also have people on shore to lookout, as they think we are nuts for going ocean fishing in kayaks My question to everyone is what can I expect as far as fish and what should I bring as far as bait and tackle?
