Jordan / Haw, 7/1 CoachKinsey and I hit the Haw River Canoe Launch last evening. (There's a new picture of that region on GoogleEarth, by the way.) Instead of paddling downstream to get around the island to the larger channel, though, we headed upstream until we got to the rocks. We backed the yaks into eddies and started hunting. (It was so cool - the yaks just sat like rocks, no anchors, nothing!!)
Nightcrawlers were the hot menu item of the evening. I caught two 6-8" cats on #6 hooks with just a 3/0 splitshot on the line. Had a small bream that shook the hook just before I grabbed him (I was slackin'). Coach caught a bream or two.
As the sun was setting, we paddled downstream and around the island to the rapids where Moseyak and a few others have had good results with crappie and stripers. We'll have to try that again sometime...
Oh yeah - and no sticks. :-)
