Fished Stoney Creek Reservoir, the oldest and smallest water supply serving Alamance County, N.C. We have seen substantial rainfall through March and April, in comparison to 2007, which was one of the worst droughts the South East has ever experienced. The downside to abundant rain is dirty water. Much of North Carolinas’ soil is heavy in clay and it doesn’t take much rain run-off to dirty up the waters. The plan, or hope, was to fish the many blow-downs and stumps drop-shot or finessed worms, but the water was really too dirty to allow it - you really had to fish baits that produce noise or vibration for the fish to key in on. Spinning baits were the first lures in the water and resulted in three small Large Mouths. Though conditions weren’t suitable, I did spend a brief time throwing rattling jigs and worms, rigged with a clacker, but no results. Before the wind picked up I tried small poppers on the fly and netted only one small sunfish. Near the dam, water temps were in the low sixties. Towards the creek mouth, at the opposite end of the lake, they were pushing seventy degrees. A recent cold snap, combined with rain, may be keeping the Bass from moving up to the shallows to bed, but with temps close to seventy it shouldn’t be long.
