Default Bluefin questions

I'm looking for some advice on bluefin tackle. First - how important is flurocarbon? I know all the pros and magazines recommend but it ain't cheap. Second - does everybody pull ballyhoo with skirts? We tried last week with Ilanders in blue/white, pink/white, blue/black, flat lines and planar lines and didn't get a bite. I'm sure I wasn't the only boat out of the 400+ that were out of MHC last weekend that didn't get a bite. BTW I did see several nice fish but didn't have my camera.

Thanks
