New River Fishing this time of Year??? Rumors of Strippers in winter months?

A guy I work with has told me that during the winter months, fairly good sized Strippers come up stream into the VA/NC border area of the New River. I just wanted to see if this was correct. If anyone has any information on this please let me know. I just wanted to know, aside from trout, what my best fishing options were for this area during the next few months.
