Square ended couplers, 3" x 3", require the # 3 Guide Plate !!!
"Bull Dog", hinged, pointed style couplers require the BD Base plate!!!
- Base plates are available with 3/4" or 1" or 1+1/8" or 1+1/4" holes.
- All Stainless Steel = No maintenance, no painting, no rusting.
We make and sell the Base Plate and the Guide Plate.
Use your Ball Mount and your Ball. They work with what you tow now.
Remove your ball - install base plate - replace ball and torque as normal.
The base plate remains on the ball mount / under the ball at all times.
You are now ready to use the " Hitch-N-Tow " guide system. For your 1st use, back up within 2 to 3 feet of coupler to set the jack height.
Place our guide plate into the holes in the base plate.
Make certain that the coupler is lined up inside the 16" wide "sweet spot" of the guide plate.
DO NOT back up unless or until you are certain of not hitting the guide plate edge!!!
Using your jack, adjust the bottom of the coupler to the middle height of the guide plate.
This will put the bottom of your coupler approx. 1" to 2" above the top of the ball.
Mark the jack for future reference. We use a sharpie or magic marker.
Back up SLOWLY until you feel it hit the back of the guide plate.
Stop, pull forward just a hair, put in park, set the brake and shut off engine for safety.
Lower coupler onto ball, remove guide plate and then hook up as you normally do.
The Guide Plate does not remain in the base plate for towing. It is only used for guiding your coupler directly over the ball !
AND THERE'S MORE.....- Additional/extra Base Plates are all the same price @ $57 each so you can have a base plate on each of your towing vehicles and share the guide plate between them! About 35 % of HNT buyers have bought additional Base Plates for 2nd and 3rd tow vehicles / using the same Guide Plate. Landscapers have bought up to 10 base plates and 2 Guide Plates for their many tow vehicles.
- The new Guide Plates have a "post" on the rear side for the buyer to put a piece of 1/2 " PVC pipe to use as a centering guide if they want to.
- Most popular base plate combo is a 3/4 " hole base plate (1- 7/8" ball) + 1 " hole base plate (2 " ball)
- 1 " hole base plate + 1-1/4 " hole base plate are a cloce second. For 2 ' ball and 2-5/16 " ball.
- Base plates that come with the standard HNT are for 1" threaded shank / 2" ball as standard, unless requested otherwise.
- Buyers should order for the type of coupler they have and the ball / shank size. This will make all parts work as they should.
- BCMF needs to know coupler type / ball and shank size. Or the standard HNT will be shipped which is for the Round end/top type of coupler with a 1 " ball hole in the base plate. This is what most boaters need anyway.
- Newer / heavier boat- trailer combinations, with surge brakes, may have the 3" x 3" Square Front coupler. This requires a different guide plate ( SQ3) to work correctly even though the standard Guide Plate ( R2 )will work but may not have enough clearance for the coupler to be directly over the ball.
- Square front coupler owners have to make sure they are within the 16 " wide "sweet spot" before backing up. The square end could hit the edge of the guide plate and possibly, (under certain conditions like boat wheels chocked/ buried in mud etc.) , bend the guide plate. Not likely, but possible.
Shipping is via UPS or USPS. When you place your order be sure to note your coupler type / ball and shank size. Buffalo Creek Marine Fabrication may contact you with specific questions about which product you'll need if not enough information is provided. You can see the product in the eStore!
