Default netting shad

I went today and finally opened my new net (6 foot 3/8 inch). I grabbed a few what I think were threadfin shad. I dont have downriggers so I just downlined them to the bottom in about 25-30 feet of water and brought them up just off the bottom a few feet. I realize this probably isnt as good as trolling but its what I can do for now. I didnt really get any bites but I will keep trying. This is my first few attempts at striper fishing so I am feeling my way along. I will be sure to post my first wopper when I get it. Any advice on rigging, baits or boat placement appreciated.
