Fish from surf

I was just curious, has anyone ever caught a king from the surf? If kings work their way around piers, why wouldn't they swim close in chasing bait?

Late june, what do you usually target? I may be going to NC beach in late June and I figure smaller blues, spanish and whiting... what about reds, cobia and sharks from the surf? I realize they have been caught before, but what about regularity? I know Oct/Nov is going to be the best time for bigger reds and blues along with a mix bag of fish. Thanks for your time.
