Thumbs up surf city report

The blues and spanish have heated up when you can find clean water.
There were two, 7 pound blues caught at the same time on a king rigg yesterday off the end of surf city pier.....had a friend come by work with band-aids all over his hands ( gotch-plug hooks)....not many spanish but lots of blues yeaterday.
I have weighed in alot of choppers( at work) ranging from 6 to 10 pounds that have been caught in the sound off the pier by the swinging bridge in the last few days, most caught by tourist fishing the park in surf city with cut bait on bottom
I think we are getting the choppers due to the closing of the menhaden plant in moorhead year before last.....we saw more schools of menhaden last year than i have in a long time skirt the beach,I also
think it is why the kig bite was so good on the piers and off the beach last year as well.

Spanish?..well if you can get clean water and get out early 6 am till 9 am
or from 6 pm till 8 pm? you dont have to measure most of them.
I have saw them up to 4 pounds so far and have heard that most are using diamond jiggs and gold hook rigs,,I prefer a gotch plug myself as i seem to catch the bigger spanish as well as 1 at a time .lol...much easyer to land one than 4 at a time. seems the color of choice has been the white on white with gold hooks and a few with red and white
I also can keep the blues away from my plug by * burning it fast on the top*,,the blues want chase a gotcha plug but so fast....so in essence you can catch spanish and not blues when they are mixed.
If you catch a blue then your getting tired..go to the jigg and rest a few minuets then go back to burning the got-cha plug
make sure you have a light to medium light rod or your plug will turn over and get foul hooked ( nothing worst than a good long cast and a foul hooked plug)..and when you get to the pier dont wind up and cast again,,,give it a few sharp jerks right at the bottom of the pier,,you may have a follower that will hit it , but be ready for a few to cut you off with that pattern.

Sea Mullet?...they are still catching there share of them as well,FRESH SHRIMP,is the key to catcing the mullet, I have always cut my shrimp into 4 pieces but have noticed in the last few days the bigger the piece of shrimp the bigger the mullet ( but im not saying put a whole shrimp on the hook) cut it in 3 pieces and not 4 if its a large shrimp....if its small? cut it in half, and remember the most scent is located in the tail of the shrimp so give them a bigg piece of tail and hang on ..lol...

There is also some nice mullet being caught in the surf as well as black drum, the mullet are nice as the ones being caught on the piers and the black drum are running from a pound to 4 pounds ( best bite on the bigger drum are off lee island)it seems this wind has made some nice holes on the surf,,some so deep you can see them from great distances from the piers ( sorry but cant say exactly where they are ) but go out and take a look and pay attention to the surfers and the tourist swimming if you have a hard time finding them by surf breaks.
But a hole can be hear today and gone tomorrow with the weather

Red Drum?...if your willing to fish hard and go in creeks and work the docks? you can catch double digit drum, the bait is on the verge of busting lose but right now its a little thin and its making the drum thats been wintering go on a feeding benge,,,live pin fish and cut bait is the top 2 natural baits right now as well as small crabs,if you can get up the creeks and catch some finger mullet or some large mudd minnows your SET!...I have noticed so inch long menhaden schools early and late so it want be long before the finger mullet will be schooled up where you can walk on them

Specks?.....the spek bite has been good the last few days....tuesday and yesterday was verrrrry good
they are being caught on .................................................. ..............
and most are being caught at................................................ ...............

Sorry but i forgot i had my spec filter on my computer here
but all of you trout fishermen understand

well thats the best i can do for a fishing report here at surf city/ topsail
things are looking up,,and there is no reason why anyone cant come down and get a mess of fish

good fishing to all
and remember....keep what your going to eat and throw the rest back
* the one you release today could be the one to put a smile on a kids face TOMORROW
