Need some help...going striper fishing

Wanted to know some pointers on striper fishing. I am planning to take my 12 year old out on Dan River this weekend in a canoe. Wanted to know anything about fishing a river and for stipers. A friend gave me some buckeyes to use and huge minnows.....I have fished most of my life but just usually go to have fun. I am used to fishing in private ponds. Thanks for your help.
