Wink messed up fishing line

went pond fishing this morning and had a lot of fun. caught 5 sm bass and 3 crappie in 1.5 hrs. but I noticed that my fishing line was not right. It came off my spinning reel in circles and didn't reel in properly. I tried putting tension on the line when reeling in. I tried pulling some off. I figure that I usually only use what is at the very end of the spool, so taking some off might give me better line. (I did put all the discarded line in my pocket) that didn't help either. I got some knots in my line from the loose coiling. and I couldn't cast as far as usually. the pond where I was this morning isn't too big. I can usually cast out almost to the middle with my heaver lures.

I have had line do this before when it had been on the reel when I bought it ( really old/ cheap). this line, I put on about a month ago. I can't remember what brand it was, but it wasn't really cheap. it is 6 pound mono.

I went fishing on monday and (got soaked) and the line was fine. But I got one of my lures in a tree. I pulled on the line to try to get the lure out. I did pull on the actual line, rather than trying to reel it in and mess up my reel. could this have caused all the line on my reel to mess up? or might there be some other cause I havn't learned about yet?

In the future, is there anything I can do to prevent this, or deal with it better?

thanks for any advice. I have learned a lot on this site. I am a better, and happier, angler for it.

Nicole
