Driving On The Beach??

As much as I have fished in my life, I have never really been "surf fishing" in the sense of driving on the actual beach and such. I've fished saltwater piers and fresh water. I was wondering what the rules are in NC for actual driving on the beach and where this is permitted? Closest I've come was back in the "good ol' days" driving out on Radio Island before it was populated..
