Default Fishing aroung bridges

I'm not sure if this is a true statement or not so I thought I'd put it here and see if you all agree or not. I was told that you can fish around a bridge (from shore) and not get into trouble. The person telling me this told me that you are allowed to fish so many feet away (i believe they said 100) and it not be on anyone's property as this is owned by the state and since you bought a state license then you can fish there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
