Default landing fish at bank

Today to celebrate the start of summer my wife and I headed to Satterwhite Point on Kerr Lake for a picnic. Couldn't resist carrying a couple of rods, and threw them out with cut bait. After about an hour, got a STRONG bite from a catfish I'm guesstimating was a solid 4 pounds. Got him all the way to the bank, and he disconnected! It dawned on me that I have zero experience landing larger fish at the bank. Any tips?
