Trout Stream Fishing Advice Needed!!!

I know NOTHING about trout fishing in mountain streams but have been invited and am going this weekend to give it a shot. Got my license, got some ultralight-light freshwater gear... OK... that's it.. the extent of my trout fishing knowledge. What is the best LIVE bait? (I've got some beetle spins and curly tailed jigs but nothing else small for artificial baits) I was told by one guy to use whole kernel corn and another told me the Wildlife man would lock me up if I did. Any help you can provide is appreciated.
