Default Circle hooks, octopus hooks, offset hooks...??

I've been kinda confused about the large number of hook designs out there. I believe what "they" say about circle hooks being a good thing, but at the TKAA tourney captain's meeting, Corey made a point to say "no octopus hooks" when he said that circle hooks were required.

What's the difference?

The fish-eye news article Randy just announced (Fish Eye News CHPP) says that a circle hook's tip points straight back to the shank. Is this the defining characteristic?
