The best material I know of for making rod holders for surf fishing is 2" vacuum tubing. It is much lighter than schedule 40 pvc. When you start adding up the weight of several rod holders the weight savings is enough to make you hunt up your local central vacuum system installer. As you get older and wiser you learn that you can really lighten the load you take across the beach without hurting your chances for being prepared. Smaller diameter lines = smaller reels + smaller sinkers+lighter weight rods to throw them. Of course you can still make a case for the $200. beach cart and then the Roll-Eez wheels. AL
