I am a freshman at UNCW and surf fish on wrightsville beach and was wondering if fresh cut bait or finger mullet is best for red drum.

If I'm looking to catch big old drum in the surf (close to the breakers), I'll go with large chunks of striped mullet (full grown mullet). Large Drum will feed on smell alone, so I feel I have a good chance of attracting them with the cut bait. But live finger mullet (juvenile striped and white mullet) will work as well.

I like to use live finger mullet if I'm fishing away from the breakers in clearer water or if I think there is a chance there might be some specks around :)
