    Default Garbacon Shoals Yakker

Just in on the NC angler forum. Wife's Family all from NC so we have made NC our summer vacation spot for years.

I used to drag a sailboat from OK to fish the coast in the Carolina Beach area. WE now have purchased retirement property on the South end of Pamlico Sound (Garbacon Creek, straight North of Beaufort) and traded the Cal 20 in for an X-Factor Kayak. I will be on the sound at least a week each summer learning Garbacon Shoal. Already had some success there last summer on trout and reds, but hoping to hook up with other yakkers for trout, reds and maybe even some tarpon action this summer.

Sounds great Bruce. Plenty of good kayak fishing in the Beaufort area and many of us head that way. Give some notice when your plans are closed and we'll see what we can do.

Welcome aboard! There's some nice fishing around Garbacon Shoals. Been there a few times chasing big reds. Lots of nice underwater structure. Haven't fished in the creek itself yet though.

Bruce, my Great, great great great grandfather, Capt John Nelson,
settled in that area in 1702. The creek was named such because the gar caught there tasted like bacon when they smoked them for preservation. Make sure to visit the July 4th celebration in South River.
    Enjoy NC!

Thanks for the warm welcome and history. Wife's family are Dickensons(Dixon) and Pivers from Core Creek and Beaufort respectively. Perhaps we should schedule summer plans to include South River on the 4th of July ?

Thanks Again, Bruce (tuning up for the sound by catching bass and catfish).

Bruce - welcome to the site. Great fishing all along the banks there on the shoal. Facing the creek, work around the left bank all the way to the end of the shoal and it is a happening place. Great location. Hope to see you on the water sometime.

Bruce, My mother's mother was a Dixon but from across the river. If anyone's roots go back very far in eastern NC, they are related in some not so distance way. I have kin in Stacy, NC that is a Dixon and a Wallace in South River. I grew up in New Bern, but spent much time in Atlantic and Core sound throughout my life.
    Happy catching
