ďBy Richard Proenneke, Sam Keith - Alaska Northwest Books (2003) - Paperback - 224 pages - ISBN 0882405136
To live in a pristine land unchanged by man; to roam the wilderness through which few other humans have passed; to choose an idyllic site, cut trees, and build a log cabin; to be a self-sufficient craftsman, making what is needed from materials available; to be not at odds with the world, but content with one's own thoughts and company: thousands have had such dreams, but Richard Proenneke lived them. This book is a simple account of the day-by-day explorations and activities he carried out alone, and the constant chain of nature's events that kept him company. From Proenneke's journals, and with first-hand knowledge of his subject and the setting, Sam Keith has woven a tribute to a man who carved his masterpiece out of the beyond.--From publisher description.Ē

    Recommended: Yes
    Cons: None
Pros: There is also a VHS tape available that matches this book. Iíve watched the tape and read the book multiple times. The book is a diary of Mr. Proenneke move to Twin Lakes, Alaska and building his cabin with hand tools. No chain saws or power tools! He lives off the land fishing and hunting and growing his own vegetables. The photos in the book and photography in the tape are excellent. He makes his own wooden spoons, furniture, wooden bowls and kitchen equipment from tin craft. He fishes for trout and burbot using a bush line, spinning rod and bamboo fly rod. You can watch clips of his video on You Tube. If you like the video the book is 10X better. This book and VHS tape were being run on the PBS channel fund raiser a few years back.
Book price is $14.95, can't remember what the video price was? Great read!
