I agree about trolling. From the beach, I think bait catches more fish but that's because it stays out there where the fish are, while cast/retrieve methods by their nature will rob you of some time (once you get past the middle of the trough coming in, bites are rare). I still prefer to cast cause I am stubborn. But from a boat, I think covering more ground increases the catch.
Heavy mono or fluorocarbon for Spanish. That will work for smaller blues too but if you get into some blues more than 4-5 lbs you will probably want some wire.
You can use a mono or fluorocarbon leader and put a wire trace in it. That will make the bitter end more "bite resistant". But I don't really think it is needed for small to medium blues and certainly not for spanish.
Troll fast, 5 knots of so to catch spanish and slow down to catch blues. Most blues will be caught when you slow down to pull in a hooked spanish.
