After running Garmin products for GPS and plotting for my last 3 boats, I decided to go with a different brand (I.e. Raymarine) for my next plotter. I had trusted Garmin stuff for over 6 years without fail, so it was hard to "change" as I had confidence fully in Garmin.
I searched high and low for the best plotter at a price point that would allow me to not break the bank or have "more" unit than I needed for my boat. Also I wanted the latest technology that wouldnt be out of date the following season. Enter Raychart 435.
Not being familiar with Raymarine products or operation, I had to "learn" about them and their systems. All the spec's came back to the Ray unit after comparing it to Humminbird, Garmin, Lowrance, Sitex, Furuno and Interphase electronics. Since flush mounting was the plan for this unit, it had to be tough enough to stand up to constant exposure, only option I saw was the Ray with the sonically welded case v.s. gasketed type units like the Humminbird or Lowrance. Gaskets over time can become brittle and shrink which leads to leaking or allowing moisture in, granted happens over time, but I wanted a no nonsense unit that wouldnt have to be replaced or serviced for at least 10 years.
The menus on this unit are straight forward and simple to use, this is probably the least complex unit I've ever run. The DGPS external anntena does a great job of keepin lock on satellites and the head sensor is robust to withstand constan exposure as well.
Great color, fast draw times, ease of programming/set up, utilization of Gold Charts (Navionics), good screen size, ease of mounting options (bracket, flush, topside, bulkhead).. just a solid, dependable and accurate unit that has earned my trust, and my trust doesnt come easy when I'm 70 miles out and need a accurate unit to stay on "lock" to get my crew and I safetly home in bad weather.
I highly recommend the Raychart 435
