Not the perfect reel.. but a dang good one for the money! Doesnt hold up to scratches too well.. but then again.. under $50 and get's the job done is the key to this reel.
The AV-80's and I have some AV-50's as well.. come with Aluminum spool and a spare grahite spool.. so can have one spooled up with mono and the other with braid.. quick change out is easy. The drag has click stops which make it nice to set the drag just that one more or less notch.. and the click helps verify and takes out any guess work.
Though not a aluminum body reel (which keeps the price low), I've found the AV80 is perfect for saltwater medium/heavy trolling lighter plugs such as cedars and small skirt and feather lures. 300 yards of 20 lb mono capacity is very nice on a reel at this price and size!! Works great as well for light bottom fishin.
If storing the reel in the gunnel on a rod, the reel has a handle fold back release feature which folds the handle flat, this helps keep the reel from "sticking out" when stored in tight quarters or in gunnels
For a $35 high capacity that has a smooth drag and can handle some big fish... this one's a no brainer! I keep a set of 4 on Penn Slammer MH 7 ft rods on my boat!
If your looking for a good general purpose reel that can handle 44 inch mahi, king mac's, grouper, false albacore and even amberjack, dont want to spend a ton of money... this is the reel right here to consider -- Okuma AV-80
