Can anyone recommend a good charter captain to catch strippers in April in Weldon? Not seeing a lot online. Anyone who’s taken a trip or knows a captain some guidance would be awesome. Thanks guys
Here is a link of a great guide. Joey is a buddy of mine and an awesome guide. He’s always fished Weldon in the spring in past years so I would assume he will this year. Give him a call.
Captain, all you need is a good private worth his weight in salt. A good place for strippers is Toby's right across from New River Air Station in Jacksonville off 117S.
My first choice would be Greg Go Fish, you can find him on FB but he has only 2 trips left on Mother's Day. Choice 2 would http://tarpamguide.com/last-openings-for-spring-2021-in-weldon/
Really all you need is a boat, some money to purchase some shad for sale near the boat ramp and go any time from the last 5 days of April to May 10 and you can catch them. Even this greenhorn catches enough to have a good day.
They've been named above but I too recommend Capt Richard Andrews or Capt Mitchell Blake. They are both top notch. If you haven't tried it before and have the time and money take a trip about a month before stripers for hickory shad.
If I were you- I'd save my $$$$ and just go. All you need is some live bait and you can pretty much be your own guide. Fish when they are there are in the thousands and anyone and everyone is catching them. No special know-how needed .
After reading the thread title, [h=1]Stripper Fishing Charter in Weldon[/h] I have to admit that I too was tempted to go there. Glad I'm not the only one who at least thought it.
Everyone in Weldon knows the top boat year after year is The Proud Mary, run by Captain Jeff Wolgemuth.
He does not migrate to the river in spring to cash in on naive tourists and first timers like most of the captains from the coast do. We always felt bad for the guests on those boats, struggling all day for a few measly fish and watching us haul em in one after another like pros! He lives in the area year round and knows every depression in the river for miles downstream from the dam. He goes out in the middle of the night before your trip and nets hundreds of fresh bait from the lake and works his tail off keeping them super lively all day. He also has 100 acres of hunting land near the river that you can rent a bed for the night for $25 each in a big 2 story farm house. Always the best fishing weekend. Every year we went out with Jeff other boats made comments all day about how many fish we were catching, no joke. We've been out with him and caught over 100 stripers, EACH person!!! In 5 hours. Guaranteed to be the best trip you can book on the Roanoke spring run.
Plus him and Donna are just very nice folks, eager to make sure your stay is fun and relaxing, and that you catch more fish than every other boat on the river. He is super competitive about being The Top Boat!
Book early, he's usually full on referrals by the end of February if not sooner. Tell him those "Crazy Daves from Greensboro" sent ya! Call the first mate Donna to make your booking. She is the best first mate we've had on any charter fresh or salt, she knows her stuff. (282)532-1319 Roanoke Tar Guide Service
*** Bonus if you like to hunt, his place is a great hunting area, including the giant wild boars he introduced to the property years ago.
Captain Ponytail was the best experienced guide option For me. Outstanding guy and will wear out your arms catching fish.
