Default Newbie questions for AR 425 trip

    Hey Guys and Gals,

My wife and I enjoy fishing the fall at Fort Fisher and CB. I am wondering about venturing out to AR425 or similar Artificial reefs to see what the hype is about.

I have a 172 Scout SportFish with a 90hp 2 stroke Yamaha and GPS trolling motor. We have never taken it out of the bay or Intercostal.

Planned on putting in at Snows Cut and heading down the Cape Fear out around bald head. Boat runs great, etc.
    Any advice on the trip?
    Like max wind/weather conditions etc?
    any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

In a 17 foot boat, I would advise not trying Cape Fear with ANY Southerly wind. You might be better off using the West Bar Cut that runs right off of Caswell Beach. The inlet is dicey at best and plain nautical on a S or SW wind. With the outflow of the river and a SW or S wind pushing water directly in towards the inlet, the waves stack up,quickly. This time of year, the prevailing wind is from the SW. I have been on 50+ foot boats and gotten my rear end kicked going through that inlet.
The West Bar cut is partially protected by Jay Bird Shoals and your ride could be smoother. I would advise following someone out the first time you use the West Bar Cut

    Mad Duck nailed it.
Why not launch at Federal Point ramp at the end of Rt. 421? ....... ICM

My wife keeps saying I don't listen to her .... or something like that.

Southern wind in the river= no good, I will note that.
Federal Point launch will work fine, worked my way through there a lot. Just never ventured past striking and battery island. Just don't want to get unsafe and have issues venturing out of the marsh.
    Thanks for the info

You should also be able to put in at the Southport Marina and go out from there. Again, I would exercise caution in the river. There is a lot of large boat and ship traffic in there as well as some VERY shallow water. The charts are mostly accurate, but, wouldn't stray too far out of deep water. The shoals move there due to storms, waves and river current
