Came home the other day from my Western NC camping trip and decided to check out the creek behind my house. Had to hike down a ways, but I made it down there and started throwing a spinner. Within 20 seconds it got slammed by a decent sized sunfish. Great colors. I hiked down a bit and fished another little section, caught a few nice bluegill and a decent crappie. So much fun. Who knew creek fishing could be such a blast! You know I'm heading back down there after work today...
I love small creek fishing! I usually never get skunked and occasionally catch some big ones as well. Small skinny water is fun to explore and easy to cover.
I have a nice trout stream about 60 yards or so behind house. Does not get hit much, due to limited access. Lots of trout that have gotten stocked, get a chance to get stream wild. Plus there is some Smallmouth etc...few 4' or so pools just behind the house. Nice to just go there with just shorts and sneaks on, fish and cool off during summer. Have caught some really decent fish. Good place for me to practice some tight area fly fishing. I feel lucky to have it that close.
Spent some more time fishing the creek this afternoon and caught 2 largemouth, along with some sunfish and bluegill. That's 4 species! Got a little video of the fun... https://youtu.be/-ZP6qcjbrxU
When I was fishing the other day, I inadvertently retrieved a lure on top of the water and got a nice blowup. Has anyone had any luck fishing topwater for panfish? I was thinking of trying a small popper or a mini buzzbait (if I can find one small enough). I know there are some bass down there, I know they'd hit the topwater lures. But it would be pretty slick to catch some panfish or a Crappie on topwater.
The Heddon tiny Torpedo is an awesome ultra light topwater lure. https://www.heddonlures.com/product/tiny-torpedo-3/
Heddon ultra light pop and the Rebel Micro critters. I have caught some nice trout on those rebels.
Picked up a tiny torpedo today. I'll give it a shot after work. I have a few Rapala floating minnows, I've never tried twitching them on top...I'll give that a try too! Thanks guys!
I just got back from a creek I go to, caught 4 largemouth none over 12”, a decent shell cracker, I hooked into a huge bowfin but she was strong and got into some brush pile and broke my line. All on live minnows.
How does cold weather affect creek fishing? I've noticed that in the past week the bite has slowed down drastically. Though the water level went up quite a bit after the big rain we had, but as of yesterday it's back down. But the bites have gotten much more infrequent.
My friend, you have yourself a little slice of Heaven. Looks like mega fun with an ultralight. Get yourself a 'Yak and explore further, assuming it is "navigable" and will not impose upon other properties.
I think it’s getting a bit cold. I went with my son yesterday and today by myself and he caught 2 jacks yesterday I caught a jack and a small bass today, but it has really slowed down.
Yep. Think the cold weather has affected the bite big time. Saturday I caught 3 sunfish, one was huge so that was nice. But Sunday nothing was biting at all.
Yes I took my son out today he caught 2 small bass I caught an average crappie but this was 4 hours of fishing and our casting game was on point so we’re a little sad. Already counting down until March.
This extreme cold front, has really shutdown the freshwater bite a good bit. But do not give up yet. This front is moving out in a day or so. Wait like 2 days after that and you will be amazed at how hot the bite is going to be.
lucky dude my dreams to have a creek behind my house thats all i like to fish now is rivers are creeks for catfish sunfish and crappie i bet you got some nice catfish in there im actually curious if it has any flatheads u should try to set out a pole over night with some cut bait
I went down to the creek on Monday after work to see if anything was biting. Not a single bite, no sign of fish. Probably still too cold. Hoping that when we finally get a few days in a row of warm weather, the fish will return. Haven't caught anything down there since November!
Walked down to the creek behind my house after work yesterday, threw the Panther Martin spinner and WHABAM! Creek fish are back!! They were choking it. Caught 5 in like 25 minutes. Couple of fatties too.
So now I know, when the bugs come out, the fish will be too!
Caught my 5th species down the creek yesterday...nice little catfish. Put up a great fight on my ultralight rod. Was throwing a Johnson Min-o-Spin. Really fun. Now I'm looking for bowfin and gar. What's the best way to catch a gar? Will a circle hook and some chicken livers do the trick???
Live minnows for the gar. Wait a few minutes to set the hook
