    Default New River Trout

Quick report from my brother and I from the last few weeks: we’ve only fished creeks so far and have stayed off the main river. Some days have seen a limit, some have been 1 or 2, and others have seen skunks. 3/4 the way into the creeks, flukes (any brand) and pink gulp swimming shad. One day we ran out of bait and used a gulp minnow for bass fishing and reeled in a 23”. Puppy drum and flounder have seen our boats as well. Gonna start using the yak here in a week or so to get further back in these creeks. Will repost with a report from the back creek. Tight lines....

I fished the main river today and caught my limit while weeding through a bunch of lizard fish. Caught 1 while trolling an mr17. Caught 3 on popping cork with a white paddle tail shad. No monsters but the smallest was 16 inches. It's going to be a good winter of trout fishing!

It's been good fishing in the yaks and the boat alike.

Went out on the NR today. It was like the mosh pit at a Metallica concert. I wasn't interested in that at all. I loaded my boat, dropped it at the house and am going in the yak where boats cant go tomorrow and Sunday....

Everytime I drive to work over the bridge on Rt 24 by the old Driftwood, there are no less than six cars pulled on the side of the road fishing the bridge. It's amazing!
Just keep swimming...ahem... fishing... just keep fishing...

Monday and Tuesday absolutely look great. Like...”I’m sick and can’t come to work” kind of days. Tuesday morning is pretty much zero wind. I’ll be out there. Not the new river though; most likely in shore somewhere...

Scott everybody know Trout won't bite using a quick release clip. Have you forgotten that ?

ICM: I know you were joking, but I had a guy tell me that years ago, a very good trout fisherman too. I know longer believe that and much prefer the versatility of being able to change lures quickly. I like the Owner Hyper welded quick snaps. Fairly expensive but light wire with minimal presence and very durable. I've only had one fail on me over many years--a big over-slot drum rolling in the surf. For winter trout in ultra clear water I'll sometimes use a loop knot with 8# - 10# fluoro instead, but I really haven't noticed any difference. Those are some fine reds.
