    Default The Dr. is....OUT!

I'm retiring from 32 years of public service effective June 1 and I've been gainfully employed since 1978. Others have told me that I'll know when it's time. And they are right. I'll be starting up my own consulting business and 'double dipping' to supplement my 2 pensions and Social Security. A lot of planning and marketing to do between now and June. Beauty of it is I can pick and choose when I work....and when I FISH! There comes a time in a man's life to pay yourself back.

Very nice!!! Also a public servant (42 years in Health and Human Services), and I am now 2 years into retirement. Love the day to day freedom, and the chance to spend 2 leisurely hours over my morning coffee, and the opportunities to fish on weekdays away from the crowds, and the fact that I don't have to schedule around limited ‘time off’ to spend time with my kids and grandsons.

I also did about 20-25 hours a month of consulting work the first year I was out. It was a good transition move, and meant that I did not have to go ‘cold turkey’ immediately (or whatever, 150 mph to 25). But at the end of that first year I was more than ready to give that up too. Congratulations, and yes, it is OK to reward yourself!!! Best wishes!

Wow. I have been working full time since 77 but still not old enough to retire. This seems unfair! Congratulations anyway John
Seems less and less of our group are still working. We need to recruit some more young blood.

I could have waited another year and a half to reach 65 before retiring but felt I was in a position to make ends meet now. Not everyone can do that and I'll have to supplement my income a bit but doing so on my schedule makes me much richer than working full time. The wealth comes in the form of doing more of what we love. A man earns that right at a certain age. It's a big decision but if you can find a way to do it go for it. There are no guarantees for tomorrow.
