New Hope Creek at Duke Forest Korstian Division - downstream of the Rhododendron Bluff

    ---
I've heard it rumored that there's at least one spot on New Hope Creek, near the Rhododendron Bluff, that holds some bass. I'd been wanting to see this bluff anyway, as it's supposed to be pretty majestic, and who could turn down the opportunity to potentially catch the fabled Black Bass?!?

As it turns out, the scenery is pretty awe inspiring.

But anyway, enough of that. You guys didn't come here for nature photography (unless you did. And maybe some of you did. But most of you didn't. Except those that did. Didn't you?!??) No, you guys/gals want to see FISH! And not just any fish, but the MYTHICAL BLACK BASS!

Well, have I got something for you.

Weighing in at a whopping 0.33 oz (that's a total guess. I didn't waste my time getting out a scale to weigh this), he's not exactly a "lunker" but he may become one when he grows up. In about 15 years.

I did at least make it a point to check his jawline with his mouth closed, and it does extend beyond the back of his eye, so I feel pretty confident saying this is a largemouth. Although it feels a bit ironic to call anything about this fish "large".

From the bluff you can work your way downstream and there is a big hole that is full of chain and redfin pickerel. That area gets my vote for prettiest spot in the Triangle.

Oh yeah, and not so many years ago there wasn't the stupid barrier and warning sign at the bluff. Don't recall anyone perishing there.

I think that spot is where I was fishing, but I can't be entirely sure. Do you know about how far downstream the place you're referring to is?

In either case, I plan to go back out there and keep working my way further downstream and explore more of the creek. There's still a lot of it I haven't seen or fished.

Well, there is the pool at the bluff, then a fast stretch, then the pool I am thinking of. When you hiked in you took the fork to the left to go to the bluff. If you go straight it will take you to the stretch downstream. I haven't fished it but if memory serves it looked pretty good. You need to go check out the Eno tho... much better fishing there.

Flat River upstream of Lake Michie is worth checking out.

Yeah, the Eno is on the list for sure. I fish this area a lot because it's close to where I live. So it's good for weekday "after work" fishing when time is more constrained. I'll probably go up and find a spot to fish the Eno one weekend day when I can commit more time.

I'll add that to the list as well. I'd also like to try Lake Michie one of these days.
