Northern Watersnake. Same colors as a copper head but copper heads have lots of tan with brown separations and northern watersnakes have more equal portions of brown over tan. The shape of that snake's head indicates it's not poisonous.. http://www.natureblog.org/copperhead-vs-northern-water-snake/
I'll have to go with the brown water snake also as I have seen several here in Johnston county,........ they are often mistaken for the cottenmouth if you cant get a good look at them.
Given the location, I’d say Northern Watersnake (Nerodia sipedon). Banded and Brown Watersnakes occur further East. The markings and colorations can be similar between Bandeds and Northerns, and to make matters more complicated, they can hybridize where their ranges overlap. One distinguishing feature of the Bandeds is the dark streak extending from the eye to the jaw (as outlined by Herps of NC). This feature appears to be absent in this snake, which is another reason I believe it’s a northern.
