    Default The Deadly Combo

I have really built my confidence up in the power of a popping cork in the last two years. There was a time when I wouldn't hardly throw one and now there's pretty much always one tied on. Video to highlight the power of this awesome rig.

Iíve been preaching that deadly combo for the better part of 10 years. You were already gone when I got back to the ramp. The trout bite was really good that day. I couldnít hardly catch a flounder for all of the trout and rat reds.

Yea it was on steady right from the moment I got there and never really stopped until dark. I threw a topwater till my arm was about to fall off though and they just were not having it. Craziest thing to have overcast skies like that and a hot bite in skinny water but the trout won't eat a spook.

This time of year topwater bites on that body get weird. Still very doable but requires a very slow cadence like winter time Mirrolure fishing. If they get that way I usually combat it with a popping cork like you did or by throwing suspending hard baits. The catch 2000 has been really good for me lately with all of the finger mullet around.

I need to get over my aversion and throw it more. I despise how they cast, I hate working them, and I hate how the strike/fight feels. Hard to argue with the fish they bring over the rails though...

They have grown on me a lot. Fact is I have just had too many days where the fish either didn't want anything else or the cork outperformed anything else to the point that it didn't make sense to not use it.

NOTED! You know what's funny is that at one point I put a pink storm under it and they wouldn't touch it.

I have had good success with the popping cork for years. It is great for when I want to take a break and eat while fishing or just fish at a more relaxed pace with the kids. Another thing to try is adding a clip on cork with rattles onto the line. I use about 2.5' of leader so the clip on cork stays in position. Gives you something to think about when you have worked an area hard with soft plastic with no bites but then start to catch fish in the same exact area with the lure suspended. Works great with a trout trick!

If they will not hit a pink shrimp, something is wrong in the world... I keep a pink dyed shrimp tied on all the time and go from their.

Really a good post and the timing was good for us all. Nice to see you posting again. Popping corks have been successful for years, and it really amounts to finding the fish and having something above the bottom so that trout can "see it from below." Keep the post coming.

Thank you for the video. Now I got to tie one back on, again.
Something I observed in your video are you're not fishing strong currents. Do you think that matters?
Do popping corks work better in calm or fast currents?
What length rod is better for throwing a popping cork?
    Thanks ....ICM
