HELP..my 8 year old son want to fish while on vacation in Holden Beach and we only have a standard fresh water rod and real..not the kids version. Do I need to purchase a different set up or can this work? Thanks for any help...

This can work.... the main reason for a "surf rod" as such a long rod is to keep the line out of the waves for a far as possible as well as casting distance. Fresh shrimp on a bottom rig, aim especially when the surf is down to 2/3' if it's possible.

That should work great + it will not be so heavy for the youngster. I use a 6 1/2 foot and a 7 foot ugly stick in the surf with 10 # line and a 2 hook bottom rig. You will not need to make long casts at all as most whiting, spots, pompano are right behind the last curl in the wave- yes- right on the beach. Rarely is it necessary to make casts over 50 feet. Freshest shrimp you can get should provide plenty of action. Please give us all a report when you get back.

Sparky, I was down at Holden on the 3rd, and everybody is correct...you won't need to cast too far. Most of the time, the surf is pretty mellow this time of year and you can hold the bottom with 2-3 oz sinkers. A 6.5 foot or 7 footer would be just fine for either fishing off the beach or off the pier. They may not be huge, but there are lots of decent sized fish to be caught just off the sand. Have fun!
It is amazing how much you can learn after you have messed up enough stuff!

Speaking as a happy customer, I would advise 2 combos from Walmart. The 7ft Tiger with 12lb spooled for $20 and the Berkley Fusion 7ft with 20lb spooled for $28.The Tiger covers it all for bottom and lures, the Fusion is a little more heavy duty for bottom. Both these combos I use for fresh, salt, surf, pier,or boat.If you fish the pier you wont need to buy the fishing license. Most piers will let you use 2 rods per day.Good Luck

#1 - 2 regular J shank aberdeen hooks on the bottom rigs if drum or flounder are being caught switch to a #1 kahle or baitholder hook.

Most of the finfish you will be targeting should be great on a #6 or #4 hook...that is if you want to catch
    a lot of whats biting....

Simple fishing and lots of results..
